Pfizer, a U. S. pharmaceutical company that markets a new erectile dysfunction treatment called Viagra Connect, is selling Viagra Connect tablets to pharmacies nationwide.
A British online pharmacy said Tuesday it has received reports of counterfeit drugs being sold online.
The British drug giant said it has received two shipments of the bogus drug, containing a "substance" of sildenafil, a drug used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, or high blood pressure in the lungs.
According to a company statement, an "unmonitored drug" was found on a table next to the drug, which was taken to a pharmacy and was detected by a customs agent.
The drugs are sold in a variety of countries including the United States and Britain.
Pfizer said it has received "several" reports of counterfeit Viagra, including ones with no prescription or other information.
Pfizer has also seized counterfeit Viagra pills and counterfeit blue printer ink. In the first instance, Pfizer said, the fake pills were taken to a pharmacy and were found to be ineffective.
In a statement, Pfizer said it "respectfully works closely with the authorities in Europe and the United States to minimize the risks of counterfeit drugs and to ensure the safety and quality of these products."
In a related business statement, Pfizer said it has received several shipments of counterfeit Viagra, including one containing the active ingredient of the "substance" sildenafil citrate.

“Viagra is the drug of choice for men with ED who haven’t been adequately treated with it,” he says. “That’s why we’re seeing a lot of doctors and physicians who are really concerned about the effect of Viagra.”
Cohen recommends that you take sildenafil at the same time as you take Viagra. It’s often used to treat ED, but there are several potential benefits for men with ED who have not responded to Viagra.
“When you take Viagra, it works a lot better than when you take sildenafil,” Cohen says. “So it’s really important that you’re taking it consistently.”
Viagra is available in 50 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg, and 400 mg strengths. Each pill contains 100 milligrams (mg) of sildenafil citrate, a potent phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitor that improves blood flow to the penis. Sildenafil citrate is taken on an as-needed basis, about three-four hours before sexual activity.
Viagra works by relaxing the smooth muscle in the blood vessels in the penis, improving blood flow. This allows more blood to flow into the penis and helps achieve an erection.
Cohen recommends that you take Viagra at a specific time every day. Men who take Viagra should have their blood pressure checked at least every other day for up to four hours after taking the medication.
The medication is taken orally and can be taken either with or without food. Viagra is taken with or without food, but it’s important to take it at the same time each day.
“When you take Viagra, it works in a similar way to a typical drug that you’re using regularly,” Cohen says. “The key is that you take it at the right time every day.”
